The Rust Belt is the Battleground
The Great Lakes states may be the best place to concentrate efforts to replace liberalism with growth. The great industrial cities of America - Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, Gary, Indiana, and so many others, have been reduced to bombed out graveyards. These were the cities that beat Hitler, Tojo, and Brezhnev. But the combination of crushing taxation, corruption, and inflexibility that grew out of misguided liberalism drained the life out of the region. Too-generous union pensions negotiated in the glory days of the 60's could not be sustained. Reckless environmentalism hit the old and unprofitable factories right when decisions were made whether to continue with the century-old factories or to relocate. Jobs disappeared in a perfect storm of high energy prices, regulation, and taxation. The Sun Belt gained the energy and ambition of those who left the Rust Belt behind. Those who were too old, too sick, or too afraid to leave stayed behind. In response, many Rust Belt communities reflexively reached for socialist solutions, like junkies looking for just one more fix.
At some point the citizens of the Rust Belt may understand the root cause of the decline from the world's most highly developed and prosperous manufacturing economy, to a lackluster and chronically depressed region. Not "corporate greed", but plain common sense caused hundreds of thousands of people to flee the oppression of liberalism. Lower taxation, less regulation, economic and social freedom from oppressive government - these are the beams of light that can pierce through the gloom of depression. These are the reforms that will allow new life to take hold and prosper. The Great Lakes region can join the Sun Belt as a part of growing and thriving America - if it chooses to throw off the chains of liberalism.
