Read My Lips - No More Borders

Bush's radical amnesty proposal may be the mistake that results in a one-term presidency. I hope.

This is where I part company with "pure" libertarians. Advocates of "free trade" and open borders ignore a critical pre-requisite: identical conditions must be present on both sides of the transaction. Especially, identical laws and identical taxes. The slightest difference between trading partners introduces distortions and imbalance which will be reflected in pricing.

Europeans have been adept at manipulating miniscule differences in order to frustrate free trade. For example, prohibitions on "genetically altered" foods.

Bush ignores the fact that America's socialist culture and legal framework makes Mexican labor artificially "cheaper" (if you ignore the social costs that are picked up by taxpayers). If both trading partners had identical laws, there would be no difference in labor cost, and American corporations would save nothing by importing foreign labor.

The corollary to the pre-requisite for identical conditions is that free trade between unequal trading partners forces equilibrium. Each side will be pressured to change toward having identical conditions.

Will America become Mexico, or will Mexico become part of the United States?

Open borders should only come after conditions have become identical between the trading partners. Until equilibrium is reached, controls are necesary to prevent the mass migrations we are experiencing now.

Bush's radical proposal ignores these realities and would result in chaotic social dislocation and strife.

Bush Slouches Toward Open Borders

Corporations export millions of jobs to China and Mexico while politicians import millions of low-skill illegal aliens from China and Mexico. The result will be social catastrophe.

Let's just admit we have open borders and stop pretending otherwise. But let's also stop requiring taxpayers to pick up the trillion dollar tab in social costs that immigration (legal or illegal) imposes.

Clearly, neither the republican nor the democrat party are going to act in our best interest on immigration.
